Position: Senior Manager, Internal Communication

Reports to: Senior Director, Internal Communication

Location: Loblaw Companies Ltd., 1 President’s Choice Circle, Brampton, Ontario L6Y 5S5

Position: Full-time permanent

When you hire great people, great things can happen.

Loblaw is a large organization, with a number of different divisions, products and services – all geared towards the needs of 18 million Canadians that shop with us every single week.  We operate in grocery retail, pharmacy retail, apparel, financial services, eCommerce, and more.  We have weighty expectations of ourselves as an organization, as we work hard to help Canadians Live Life Well.  And while we admittedly have lofty goals, we do a lot of really cool stuff to achieve those goals.

We need a seasoned, creative and collaborative individual to help keep our people informed – and excited – about all this great stuff. We have dynamic internal communications tools, and we need someone knowledgeable and excited to use them. That’s why we are looking for a Senior Manager, Internal Communication to join our team, supporting Loblaw Technology & Analytics and Supply Chain.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Proactively serve as the internal communication lead for several corporate functions within the organization – namely, Loblaw Technology and Analytics and Supply Chain.  This includes direct support for our Chief Technology and Analytics Officer, SVP of Supply Chain, as well as their respective leadership teams.

  • Build and execute internal communication plans that span traditional and non-traditional channels, both within teams and outwardly to the rest of our business.  This will involve a variety of tactics for any number of uses, including departmental town halls, annual conferences, video segments, newsletters, executive speeches, intranet articles, company announcements, and more.

  • Build and drive a social media strategy for key departments, supporting executives to amplify our purpose, support our reputation, and attract/retain talent.

  • Provide guidance, support and expertise to divisional Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Employee Resource Groups, to help foster a culture of inclusion within the organization.

  • Lead a team of two communicators in the delivery of proactive communication plans.

  • We use plain language to communicate with our colleagues, so we need someone who understands key business metrics and who can easily explain their meaning to a broad audience.
  • Oversee communication to ensure awareness and alignment against our company strategy and planning cycles.
  • Play a lead role in the adoption of our digital workspace/intranet site.
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset within the department, by effectively measuring the impact of communication efforts post-implementation and adjusting wherever necessary.

  • Act as a guardian of our internal brand standards.  This includes managing our internal tone of voice based on the message at play.

  • Manage crisis communication plans, as needed.  Spoiler alert: this can involve working evenings and weekends from time to time.

Ideally you will have:

  • 8-10 years of related experience, primarily in internal communication, doing most if not all of the things noted above.

  • University degree, preferably with a specialization in English, Communication, Public Relations or a related discipline.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a belief in plain language, and an ability to write in various styles and formats.

  • Track record of planning and executing strategic communication plans that drive measurable business results.

  • In-depth understanding of internal communications principles and practices.

  • Proven ability to support and counsel senior leaders; strong interpersonal skills.

  • Experience with script development and video production.

  • Event management experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of, and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word and PowerPoint).

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to adapt to change and meet timelines (without sacrificing quality!).

  • A positive attitude, a desire to learn, a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get work done either independently or as part of a team.

  • Assets: bilingualism and a sense of humour.
